About Aston University

Aston University, located in the heart of Birmingham, England, is a renowned public research institution. Originating as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School in 1895, it evolved into the UK’s first college of advanced technology in 1956. Aston University was officially granted its royal charter by Queen Elizabeth II on April 22, 1966.

Aston is known for its pioneering approach to education, having introduced the integrated placement year concept over 50 years ago. Today, more than 73% of Aston students participate in a placement year, marking the highest percentage in the UK. The institution’s annual income for 2021–22 was £197.7 million, with £19.3 million coming from research grants and contracts, and an expenditure of £219.4 million.

In 2020, Aston University received The Guardian’s prestigious “University of the Year” award, along with the “Buildings That Inspire” accolade for its Students’ Union. The Times Higher Education Awards recognized Aston as the “Outstanding Entrepreneurial University” in the same year.

Aston’s achievements continue to be recognized, as it was shortlisted for the University of the Year award at the Times Higher Education Awards in September 2021.
