About Durham University

Durham University, officially known as the University of Durham, is a distinguished collegiate public research institution located in Durham, England. Established in 1832 by an Act of Parliament and later granted a royal charter in 1837, it holds the distinction of being the first recognized university to open in England in over 600 years, making it the third-oldest university in the country.

The university operates under a collegiate structure, with its functions divided between academic departments and 17 colleges. Academic departments focus on research and teaching, while colleges oversee domestic arrangements and student welfare. Durham University is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of British research universities and is affiliated with various international university groups, including the Matariki Network of Universities and the Coimbra Group.

The university’s estate comprises 83 listed buildings, ranging from the historic 11th-century Durham Castle to more modern structures. Notably, Durham University owns and manages the Durham World Heritage Site in collaboration with Durham Cathedral. The university has a strong academic community, with numerous Fellows of prestigious societies among its current and emeritus academics.

Durham University has a rich history, and its graduates are recognized by the Latin post-nominal letters Dunelm after their degree. The institution maintains high academic standards, reflected in its average UCAS Tariff for new entrants and the notable achievements of its alumni in various fields.
