Definition

Sessional Grade Point Average or Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is a way of summarizing a student’s performance in a semester, calculated by considering the weighted average of grade points in all the courses taken during that semester.

SGPA = Points secured in the semester/Credits secured in the semester

Elements of SGPA

  1. Semester: These are chapters in your academic book, each spanning six months for a deep dive into the course material.
  1. Grade Point:These points represent the performance of students in a specific subject learned during the course. These points are directly proportional to the knowledge of the students in that particular subject.
  1. Credit Points: It measures the time and effort you’ve dedicated to mastering each subject. It’s like a report card for your commitment and understanding.

Calculation of SGPA

Candidates who have grade points in all the subjects can easily take out the SGPA by following the below-mentioned steps:

  1. List down the credit points for each subject.
  2. Multiply the credit points by the grade obtained in each subject.
  3. Add up all the outcomes from the multiplication.
  4. Divide the total by the sum of the credit points for all subjects.
  5. The result is your SGPA, reflecting your performance for the semester.

Example

SubjectCredit PointGrade
Subject A49
Subject B28
Subject C38
Subject D27

Start the process by multiplying credit points with their scores:

4 X 9 = 36,  2 X 8 = 16, 3 X 8 = 24,  2 X 7 = 14

After that, you will have to add all the outcomes of the first step

36 + 16 +24 + 14 = 90

After that, add all the credit points

4 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 11

Finally, divide 90 by the total credit points

90/11 = 8.18

So, 8.18 is the SGPA

Conversion / Calculation of SGPA To Percentage

Percentage = (SGPA – 0.75) X 10

Step Wise Procedure for which you will be able to take out the percentage easily:

  1. Calculate the SGPA for each subject.
  2. Subtract 0.75 from each SGPA.
  3. Multiply the result by 10.
  4. The outcome is your percentage.

Example

Let’s assume, the SGPA of the student is 8.3

So, we will subtract 0.75 from SGPA

8.3 – 0.75 = 7.55

Multiply the outcome by 10

7.55 X 10

So, the percentage is 75.5%

60 to < 70B+ (Good)7

Conversion of SGPA to CGPA

  1. First, it is compulsory to calculate the SGPA for all the semesters.
  2. When you get SGPA of all the semesters, add them.
  3. Divide the summation of the SGPAs by the number of semesters you have given.
  4. The number you see will be your CGPA.

Example

How to find the SGPA and CGPA of a student for the following three semesters,

First semester = 6.0

Second semester = 7.5

Third semester = 6.8

Student’s SGPA and CGPA is calculated as follows:

SGPA = 6.0+7.5+6.8 = 20.3

= 20.3/3

=6.7

Your CGPA is 6.7

Conversion of SGPA to CGPA to Percentage

How to calculate the CGPA to percentage of a student for the following four semesters,

First semester = 7.0

Second semester = 7.2

Third semester = 6.8

Fourth semester = 7.8

SGPA = 7.0+7.2+6.8+7.8

=28.8

CGPA = 28.8/4

= 7.2

And then to convert the CGPA to the percentage, simply multiply the calculated CGPA with 9.5

CGPA to percentage = 7.2*9.5 = 68.4%
